Cohiba Puro Dominicana Cigar Review | Whiskey Gambler
Cohiba Puro Dominicana
The Cohiba name carries a lot of weight — and a lot of skepticism. Some say it's all brand, no cigar. I lit one up to settle the argument myself.
Let's address it right up front — Cohiba is the most counterfeited cigar brand on the planet, Cuban or Dominican. So when one lands in your humidor, a little healthy skepticism is earned. What I can tell you is this: the Puro Dominicana I pulled out of the box was the real deal. A firm medium-brown Dominican Habano wrapper with slightly raised dark veins, an oily satin finish, and a cold draw that hit of sweet hay and aged tobacco. This cigar has something to say.
What makes the Puro Dominicana genuinely interesting is that it's a true puro — every leaf, wrapper to filler, grown in the Dominican Republic. Dominican puros were considered impossible not long ago. The island's tobacco couldn't produce quality wrapper leaf. New growing techniques changed that, and this cigar is proof of what's now possible out of the Cibao Valley. Aged in charcoal wooden barrels, this blend has depth that earns its price tag.

First Third
Strong peppery spice hits right out of the gate — bold, assertive, letting you know this isn't a mild smoke. Behind the pepper there's a creamy texture that softens the blow. Cedar and a faint anise note weave through the first third. The draw is excellent, burn line is even, ash builds solid and grey. Body sits at medium and climbing.
|
Second Third
The spice settles and the real character shows up. Charred wood and leather take center stage — a direct result of that barrel aging — with a sweet cocoa note threading underneath. Earthiness deepens. Body pushes firmly into medium-full territory. The smoke output is generous, retrohale delivers a satisfying wood and spice combination that lingers.

Final Third
The final third is where the Puro Dominicana makes its case. Musty aged tobacco, leather, and dark wood all intensify without tipping into bitterness. Strength ramps up to full — this cigar finishes with authority. Construction holds clean through to the nub. The finish is long, woody, and satisfying. Pair this with something with proof behind it.

| Aroma | Sweet hay on cold draw, charred wood and leather throughout — the barrel aging is doing real work here | ★★★★★ |
| Flavor | Complex progression from pepper and cream to charred wood, cocoa, leather, and aged tobacco — earns every transition | ★★★★★ |
| Complexity | Three distinct thirds with real movement — not just a one-note smoke hiding behind a famous band | ★★★★☆ |
| Value | Priced at a premium the name partly drives — but the cigar itself backs it up more than the skeptics admit | ★★★★☆ |
