The First Distillery in Downtown Covington in Over a Century Just Made a Sophisticated S'more in a Bottle.

Covington, Kentucky has not had a distillery operating in its downtown since Prohibition. Wenzel changed that when they opened in a century-old repurposed Packard automotive building and started doing something genuinely interesting with sourced barrels - blending, toasting, finishing, and producing award-winning expressions that have put a small Northern Kentucky operation on the national whiskey map faster than almost anyone expected. The Barrel Proof Toasted at 111.8 proof is the bottle that started that conversation. And after pouring it, I understand exactly why.

Wenzel is not a traditional distillery in the grain-to-glass sense - at least not yet. They are a rectifier and blender operating with real sophistication and a genuine palate for what makes great bourbon great. They source barrels from undisclosed distilleries, blend them with precision, apply finishing techniques that range from sherry casks to toasted barrels, and bottle the results at proof without apology. Their Sherry Cask Bourbon won World's Best Finished Bourbon at the 2025 World Whiskies Awards. Their Wheated Two won Best American Blended Limited Release at the same event. This is not a brand coasting on a building and a backstory. This is a blending operation with real credentials.

The Barrel Proof Toasted Batch 01 was released in September 2025 at the Kentucky Bourbon Festival and represents Wenzel's approach to the toasted barrel format - taking their blended straight bourbon base and finishing it in toasted oak to add a layer of dark, roasted complexity that the standard charred barrel aging does not produce. At 111.8 proof the result is one of the most distinctive pours to come out of Northern Kentucky in years. Other reviewers called it a sophisticated s'more. After pouring it myself, I am not going to argue with that description.

🏆 Wenzel's Award Pedigree

Wenzel Distillery has collected serious hardware in a short period of time. Their Sherry Cask Bourbon won World's Best Finished Bourbon at the 2025 World Whiskies Awards - one of the most competitive spirits competitions in the world with blind judging by independent experts. Their Wheated Two won Best American Blended Limited Release at the same event. For a distillery that opened in Covington, Kentucky in 2022, winning two World Whiskies Awards by 2025 is a remarkable achievement and the clearest possible signal that the people behind Wenzel know exactly what they are doing with a barrel.

The Color

Rich amber with deep mahogany undertones - darker and more concentrated than a standard barrel proof bourbon of similar age would typically present. The toasted barrel finish has extracted additional color compounds from the wood, deepening the hue into something that catches light with a warm copper glow at the edges. The legs in the glass are long and deliberate at 111.8 proof. This pours with visible weight and viscosity that signals real body before the glass even reaches your nose. For a no-age-statement blended expression this color is impressive and tells you the component barrels are carrying genuine maturity behind them.

The Nose

Pour it and the first wave is immediate and distinctive - dark mocha and toasted hazelnut leading hard, rich and roasted in a way that you simply do not encounter in a standard charred barrel bourbon. This is the toasted oak finish doing its most important work right up front, pulling caramelized wood sugars and roasted grain compounds to the surface that the charcoal filtering and standard barrel extraction leave buried. It smells like the inside of a very good chocolatier's shop combined with a freshly stoked fireplace. That combination should not work. It absolutely does.

Underneath the mocha and hazelnut, vanilla and caramel provide the classic bourbon backbone - familiar and grounding against the more unusual toasted notes above them. Dark chocolate develops as the nose opens further, deepening the roasted quality and adding a slight bitterness that balances the sweetness beautifully. Toasted marshmallow arrives - and here is where the sophisticated s'more description earns its place. Graham cracker sweetness threads through the back of the nose, tying the chocolate, marshmallow, and toasted wood notes into a cohesive aromatic profile that is genuinely unlike anything else in a standard bourbon lineup.

A light floral quality and a faint dried fruit note add complexity in the background, keeping the nose from being purely dessert-forward. At 111.8 proof the ethanol is present but never harsh - the blending and the toasted finish having produced a spirit that manages its proof elegantly on the nose.

The Palate

The palate delivers on every promise the nose made and then pushes further. The entry is rich and coating - a fat, round mouthfeel that wraps the 111.8 proof in enough natural sweetness and body to make it immediately approachable despite the heat. Dark mocha and toasted hazelnut from the nose translate directly onto the tongue with even more concentration and intensity. This is a genuinely distinctive flavor combination in American bourbon and it commands your full attention from the first sip.

Brown sugar and caramel build through the mid-palate, joining the mocha and hazelnut in a layered sweetness that is complex rather than simple. Dark chocolate intensifies here - moving from milk chocolate territory into something closer to 70% dark, slightly bitter, adding depth and sophistication. Baking spice arrives alongside the chocolate: cinnamon, a touch of clove, warm nutmeg providing structural backbone that keeps the sweetness from running away with the whole experience.

"Wenzel won World's Best Finished Bourbon in 2025. After one pour of the Barrel Proof Toasted you understand exactly how a brand that opened in 2022 earns hardware that fast. This is serious blending work."

- Whiskey Gambler

The toasted barrel's contribution is most evident in the mid-to-back palate - a roasted quality that sits underneath all the sweetness and chocolate like a foundation, giving the whole profile a depth and complexity that the charred barrel base alone would not produce. Vanilla biscotti and a warm bread note develop through the back half, adding a baked quality that connects to the hazelnut and rounds the whole experience into something genuinely memorable. This is a palate that keeps evolving sip after sip and rewards the time you give it.

The Finish

Long, warm, and roasted - the finish is the most impressive part of the Wenzel Toasted experience and the clearest evidence of how well the toasted barrel technique has been applied here. Dark mocha and chocolate lead the exit, holding on with real conviction through the mid-finish. Toasted hazelnut and a warm nuttiness develop as the sweetness begins to recede, adding a savory depth that is completely unique in the finish of an American bourbon. The baking spice from the palate cycles back with cinnamon and nutmeg providing a warm, spiced backbone all the way through the exit.

The finish is clean, long, and genuinely satisfying - no harsh edges, no bitter tannin overhang, no heat that outlasts the flavor. The toasted barrel extraction has been handled with real precision here. Wenzel has pulled everything it has to offer from the wood without letting any single element run ahead of the others. That balance in the finish is the signature of the award-winning blending instincts that built this distillery's reputation in three years. The warmth from 111.8 proof lingers pleasantly well past the last sip. This finish makes you reach for the glass again out of pure instinct.

★★★★★
Covington's Finest. A Sophisticated S'more at 111.8 Proof. Wenzel Earns Every Award.
The Bottom Line

The 4.0 reflects a bottle that is genuinely exceptional in its flavor profile and execution, held back only by the NAS classification and the undisclosed mashbill that keep serious collectors from having the full picture of what is in the glass. The liquid itself deserves a higher conversation. The mocha, hazelnut, and toasted wood combination at 111.8 proof is unlike anything else in a standard Kentucky bourbon lineup and it is executed with the precision you would expect from a distillery that won two World Whiskies Awards in its first three years of operation.

Wenzel is the kind of craft operation that serious bourbon collectors should be paying attention to before the national media catches up. They are doing interesting, award-worthy work in a historic building in Covington, Kentucky, blending sourced barrels with a sophisticated palate and finishing them with techniques that produce genuine flavor innovation rather than marketing gimmicks. The Barrel Proof Toasted is the most accessible proof of that capability - distinctive, well-executed, and genuinely delicious from the first pour to the last drop.

At $99 this earns its price. The toasted barrel character alone makes it worth finding. The fact that it comes from an operation with World Whiskies hardware on the shelf makes it worth taking seriously.

4.0 out of 5. A sophisticated s'more in a bottle. Wenzel is a name to know. Live the Life. ♠
