Watch The Tasting

Belize doesn't come up when serious rum gets discussed. Tiburon is here to fix that.

No Added Sugar • Per Distillery

Family-owned distillery on the Caribbean coast. Molasses base, aged in ex-bourbon barrels, then re-casked for a second maturation in oak. It's a blend of 4, 6, and 8 year stocks carrying an 8 year age statement, and it lands around $35.

For anyone who lives in the bourbon world, that barrel pedigree is the hook. This drinks like a spirit that understands what oak is supposed to do, and it does it without leaning on a pile of added sugar to get there. At this price, that alone earns a look.

Tasting Notes

Nose

Big for the proof. Vanilla and brown sugar lead, with real bourbon-barrel oak sitting underneath. Rich, a little pungent, no solvent, no sharp edges. One of those noses you sit with before you sip.

Palate

Velvet. That's the word. Smoother than the age statement suggests, with vanilla and brown sugar carrying straight through from the nose. Oak and soft smoke build in the middle. Light on bite, but it's there enough to remind you it's 8 years old and not a sugar bomb.

Finish

Smoke and coffee move in, with tobacco creeping behind them. Clean and satisfying, though it's shorter than you'd want. That's the one knock. It sets up a great final act and then exits early.

The Verdict

Whiskey Gambler Says

This is a smooth, honest, oak-forward rum that punches well above $35. It leans into its bourbon-barrel DNA instead of hiding behind added sugar, and that's exactly why it works for the bourbon crowd.

It's not the most complex pour on the shelf, and the short finish keeps it from the top tier. But as a value sipper you'll actually reach for, it delivers. Neat is best. Handles a single large cube without falling apart.

If you drink bourbon and skip the rum shelf, this is the bottle that changes your mind.
