Oliva Serie V Cigar Review | Whiskey Gambler
Oliva Serie V
The Serie V is the cigar that built the Oliva name into a household word. It has been scoring 90 points, landing on Top 25 lists, and holding down serious humidors for nearly two decades. Some legacies fade. This one only gets stronger.
The Oliva family has been in tobacco since 1886 when patriarch Melanio Oliva first grew leaf in Cuba. The Serie V is the cigar that brought that legacy into the modern premium market -- and it did so with such authority that it eventually gave rise to the Serie V Melanio, which won Cigar Aficionado's Number 1 Cigar of the Year in 2014. The original Serie V is the foundation that made all of that possible. It is rolled by a small number of the top rollers at Oliva's Tabolisa factory in Nicaragua, using Jalapa ligero fillers -- leaves from the highest priming on the plant, delivering maximum flavor and body.
The wrapper tells the whole story before you ever cut it. The Habano Sun Grown leaf is a reddish-brown Colorado with a natural oil sheen and color-sorted to be perfectly uniform across every cigar in the box. The seams are tight, the cap is smooth, and the cigar is firm throughout with no soft spots. The pre-light aroma delivers pepper, leather, coffee, and cedar. The cold draw opens with cream, chocolate, and a spice that warms the lips immediately. This cigar is already performing before the first match is struck.
What separates the Serie V from everything else at this price point is the consistency. Over decades and thousands of boxes the Serie V has delivered the same powerful, refined profile without a single compromise. That kind of reliability is rarer in the premium cigar world than any score or award could capture.

First Third
A zesty, perfectly balanced profile arrives on the first draw -- wood and coffee beans with a mild cocoa sweetness threading through from the start. White pepper on the retrohale adds a cinnamon spice with a leathery cedar base. Marzipan and woody earth join quickly with fleeting floral notes that disappear as fast as they arrive. The draw is flawless. Smoke output is thick, creamy, and generous. Burn line establishes razor sharp. The Jalapa ligero is already making its presence known -- this is a full-bodied cigar that does not wait to introduce itself.

Second Third
The pepper returns with real authority in the second third while the coffee notes fade slightly into the background. Leather and mocha take center stage -- rich, smooth, and deeply satisfying. Sweet nuts and barnyard nuances zoom in and out adding complexity throughout. The spice picks up to become the focal point of the profile while the cocoa sweetness pulls back to a subtle background note. Strength is climbing steadily toward full. A new coffee note appears near the halfway point alongside leather that has been building since the first draw. This is the Serie V performing at its absolute peak.

Final Third
Strong espresso dominates the final third alongside black pepper heat that builds without ever crossing into harshness. Dark bitter chocolate, black licorice, and cedar all show up in the closing stretch. For the first time, rich tobacco notes appear in the background completing the full picture of the Jalapa ligero filler. Despite the substantial increase in strength and intensity the cigar remains supremely balanced. The nub stays cool and firm. A long finish of coffee, pepper, and leather closes one of the most consistently outstanding full-body smokes in the premium category.
