Camacho Connecticut

Ecuador Connecticut Shade  ·  Honduras  ·  Mild to Medium

Camacho built its entire reputation on bold, aggressive blends. So when they released a Connecticut, everybody leaned in. Turns out a brand known for power makes a surprisingly refined mild smoke. Turns out very well, in fact.

First Impressions

Davidoff acquired Camacho back in 2008 and the Connecticut was the first major new line to follow. That context matters because it shows intention -- Camacho was staking out new territory without abandoning what made the brand credible. The result is one of the most respected Connecticut blends on the market today, built at Oettinger Davidoff's Camacho factory in Danli, Honduras by some of the best rollers in the business.

The cigar comes out of the box dressed in a pale, satin-smooth Ecuador Connecticut shade wrapper with a latte coffee hue and minimal veining. The oversized orange and black Camacho band is unmistakable. Construction is exactly what you would expect from a Davidoff-backed operation -- firm, even fill, no soft spots, and a triple seam cap finished cleanly at the head. The cold draw delivers chocolate and a faint sweetness with an earthy undertone at the foot. This cigar is already telling you it has range.

What separates the Camacho Connecticut from most mild cigars is the binder and filler combination. Dominican and Honduran tobaccos sit beneath that Connecticut wrapper giving the blend a spice backbone that most mild smokes never develop. This is not a one-dimensional cigar hiding behind a pretty wrapper. There is real construction and real intent behind it.

Tasting Notes
First Third
Buttery smooth right out of the gate -- cedar and toasted earth lead with a honeysuckle sweetness just behind them. A light black pepper appears on the retrohale, subtle but present. The smoke texture is creamy and generous from the first puff. Notes of unsalted peanut and bakers spice round out the first third. Burn line is razor even. Draw is open and effortless. The Camacho DNA is already showing -- this is a mild cigar with a backbone.
Second Third
The pepper through the nose turns up slightly as the second third develops -- still gentle but more present than most Connecticuts ever get. The honeysuckle sweetness transitions toward vanilla cream. Citrus notes add brightness. Earth and cedar remain the primary voice with just enough complexity to keep the palate engaged. The Dominican and Honduran fillers are doing their job here -- adding spice and character that the Ecuador wrapper alone would never deliver. Body sits comfortably at mild to medium.
Final Third
The final third is where the Camacho Connecticut pulls its best move. A notable sweetness develops and changes the profile considerably -- earth and cedar remain but a rich caramel finish emerges that makes this cigar hard to put down. The pepper on the retrohale softens back down. The burn holds clean and straight all the way through without a touch-up. Finishes cool, smooth, and satisfying. No heat, no harshness. A genuinely impressive close to a well-constructed smoke.

The Verdict
Camacho took a wrapper category known for being safe and predictable and built something that actually challenges the palate without ever becoming aggressive. The Ecuador Connecticut shade wrapper is the vehicle but the Dominican and Honduran fillers are the engine -- and that combination produces a mild to medium smoke with real spice, real complexity, and a caramel finish in the final third that sets it apart from every other Connecticut on the shelf. Accessible enough for newer connoisseurs. Interesting enough for experienced smokers. This is what a well-built mild cigar looks like when a serious factory takes it seriously. A box is worth having at all times. ♠
